What it gives you when checking a car
Tells filler from a thick clear coat
An ordinary gauge reports 200 microns and says nothing more: it could be a generous clear coat, or it could be bodywork. DPM-816 PRO reports magnetic filler separately, so you get a conclusion rather than a number — this panel was rebuilt.
A range up to 3500 microns
Enough for a hundred-micron factory coat and a finger-thick layer of filler alike. At the ceiling a cheap gauge stops telling thick repairs from very thick ones — this one does not hit the ceiling.

A factory finish is usually 80–150 µm, a respray noticeably more, and filler repairs run past a thousand. The upper limit exists for those spots: at the ceiling the gauge would stop telling thick repairs from very thick ones.

The first number is a share of the reading itself, the second a fixed addition. On a thin factory layer the addition dominates; on thick repairs the percentage does. That is why it is given per band rather than as one averaged figure.

The step by which the number on screen changes. The gauge does not show differences finer than this step. It should not be confused with accuracy — they are different things.

A reading takes a fraction of a second: touch the probe to a panel and it reports total coating thickness in microns. A factory finish sits at roughly 80–160 microns, a resprayed panel gives 200–300, and anything above 500 almost certainly means filler and bodywork under the paint.

Factory galvanising can’t be faked with a repaint — it’s either there or it isn’t. The gauge lets you compare neighbouring panels: one bare panel among galvanised ones. Matching paint thickness alone doesn’t mean "original panel".

How is COMBO different from the ProPlus kit?
The gauge is identical. COMBO adds a leather body case, a carrying bag and a gift box to the base set — more protection and better as a present.
How is PRO different from LITE?
Accuracy: one percent against two on the LITE. PRO also adds the industrial "P" mode with a calibration table and a three-year warranty instead of one.
Does it need calibrating before every reading?
No. Auto calibration runs at power-on. The reference foils and metal bases in the kit are there to verify accuracy.
Does the reading stay visible in bright sun, or does the screen wash out?
It stays visible. The display is a monochrome FSTN LCD: it works on reflected light rather than emitting its own, so in direct sun the figures only gain contrast. That is what separates an LCD from a colour screen, which on a clear day you end up reading in the shade of your hand. In a bay, under cover or in the evening the backlight takes over: it comes on at the press of a button and switches itself off after a minute of inactivity. The gauge is rated down to −25 °C, so a winter inspection is not off the table either.
