A factory finish is usually 80–150 µm, a respray noticeably more, and filler repairs run past a thousand. The upper limit exists for those spots: at the ceiling the gauge would stop telling thick repairs from very thick ones.
Accuracy±1% + 1 µm (0–500); ±1% + 10 µm (501–3000)
The first number is a share of the reading itself, the second a fixed addition. On a thin factory layer the addition dominates; on thick repairs the percentage does. That is why it is given per band rather than as one averaged figure.

The step by which the number on screen changes. The gauge does not show differences finer than this step. It should not be confused with accuracy — they are different things.

A magnetic probe works on steel, an eddy-current one on aluminium. A combined probe holds both principles in one tip and therefore suits cars with mixed bodywork.

What does the verification include?
The gauge ships with a passport carrying an initial-verification mark (valid for one year) and the verification procedure. Re-verification follows the same procedure.
How is it different from the DPM-816 PRO?
The kit and the documents: a verification passport and procedure instead of cases for car inspection. The measuring side is shared, range up to 3000 microns.
What metals does it work on?
Ferrous, non-ferrous and galvanised substrates. Gauges of this type do not measure on plastic or fibreglass — there is no metal to measure from.
How does the display read on site — outdoors and on the shop floor?
Equally well in both. The display is a monochrome FSTN LCD: it works on reflected light, so out in the open on a sunny day the reading only gains contrast, where a colour screen would wash out in the same conditions. On the shop floor, in a windowless room or on an evening shift the backlight takes over — on a button, switching off automatically after a minute of inactivity. The frugal screen also stretches the life of a single AAA cell: there is nothing to charge before heading out to a site.
