Hidden repairs on the screen, not in words
The gauge tells a thick coat of paint from the filler beneath it. A wing after a knock or a resprayed door shows up before the money changes hands — and a respray knocks more off the price than the gauge costs.
You set the sensitivity yourself
On the AVTOPODBOR line the zinc and filler detectors have an adjustable threshold. Tune it to catch even a thin layer of zinc on a suspicious door, or coarsen it when only obvious findings matter: the gauge adapts to the car and to how you inspect, not the other way round.

Colour and sound flag when a reading leaves the normal range. Even first time holding a gauge, the conclusion is hard to get wrong.

Spring-loaded probe with a steel tip
The probe is sprung and self-aligns to the surface, so a reading on a curved wing or a door crease stays correct.
Textured grip
The gauge is held one-handed, often in a glove, and pressed to the panel by feel — the texture keeps it from twisting.

A factory finish is usually 80–150 µm, a respray noticeably more, and filler repairs run past a thousand. The upper limit exists for those spots: at the ceiling the gauge would stop telling thick repairs from very thick ones.

The first number is a share of the reading itself, the second a fixed addition. On a thin factory layer the addition dominates; on thick repairs the percentage does. That is why it is given per band rather than as one averaged figure.

A factory finish sits at roughly 80–160 microns, a resprayed panel gives 200–300, and anything above 500 almost certainly means filler and bodywork under the paint. The gauge shows that number in a second — all that is left is to walk around the car.

How is the AvtoBig kit different from the other AVTOPODBOR kits?
The gauge is identical across the range. AvtoBig adds a storage pouch to the base set — easy to carry the gauge around without scratching it.
Does it need calibrating before every reading?
No. Auto calibration runs at power-on. The reference foils and metal bases in the kit are there to verify accuracy when a reading looks doubtful.
What does the UV detector actually show?
Fresh traces of technical fluids: engine oil, transmission fluid and most coolants fluoresce on their own, with no additives. Inside the car ultraviolet reveals organic stains — and a recent shampoo clean along with them, since detergents contain optical brighteners and glow an even blue across a whole seat; blood, by contrast, does not glow but darkens. With documents it helps: on genuine registration papers the security fibres glow while the paper itself does not, so a forgery printed on office paper lights up whole. It does not replace a proper banknote detector, though — the fine marks on banknotes are meant for a dedicated device. Look in the shade.
What surfaces does it not work on?
The gauge measures coating over metal. It does not work on plastic bumpers or fibreglass at all — there is no metal to measure the thickness from.
Can you see the reading in bright sun? Cars are inspected outdoors, after all.
Yes — in sunlight the screen reads even better. The display is a monochrome FSTN LCD: it emits no light of its own and works on reflected light, so the brighter the day, the crisper the figures. With a colour screen it is the other way round — on a clear day you have to shade it with your hand and look for somewhere darker. The backlight comes on at the press of a button for a dark bay, an underground car park or an evening check in the yard, and switches itself off after a minute of inactivity to save the cells. A winter walk-around is covered too: the gauge is rated down to −30 °C.
